To the Editor:
Granted, Marlene Shaver's short but creative letter ("Republicans need to respect current Rochester government," February 16, 2007) is by far the most outrageous sweeping under the rug of the wrong done to me by town officials, in their official capacity, during a so-called "interview" behind closed doors.
Let me stress that WRONG has no political color, it is not Republican, Conservative or Democratic. WRONG is simply WRONG, and to dismiss it the way she does it's also WRONG.
Marlene Shaver adds insult to injury by suggesting that the Republicans created this situation. Only because it's impossible for her to admit that her beloved Democratic town board majority was WRONG in everything they did before, during and after my "interview"? Please, read again the newspapers, Ulster County Press, Blue Stone, the editorials in Freeman and Times Herald...
How does she dare to say that we, the Republicans, owe an apology? Should we apologize for gross official misconduct, slander, sexual harassment and discrimination? Should we apologize for their not respecting the Open Government Laws?
How does she dare to imply that I am the one who didn't respect "our democracy"? How was it "democratic" to invent and spread rumors, fake an "interview" in a hostile environment, show me obscene photos and throw at me unconscionable accusations? Just because I dared to volunteer for "their" Historical Preservation Commission? Just because my husband is the Republican Club's webmaster?
Respect the current Rochester government? Respect must be earned.
Judging by her letter, Marlene Shaver longs for the kind of unconditional respect I remember too well: in Communist Romania we were forced to listen to speeches, clap for hours, scream out loud our "respect" for the "beloved leaders."
Does Ms. Shaver have a clue about why "I totally lost my trust in them as leaders"?
