Mel Tapper
Town Justice

Mel Tapper is the Republican/Conservative candidate for the office of Town Justice.

Mel has lived in the Town of Rochester for over 50 years. He grew up in Accord, graduated Rondout Valley H.S. in 1963, attended Ithaca College and then became co-owner and operator of his family's poultry farm.

In the late 1970s he decided to change careers and went to court reporting school and in 1981 became a Freelance Court Reporter. In 1986 he became a Hearing Reporter with the NYS Division of Parole, during which time he travelled to the various prisons in New York State with the Parole Commissioners doing parole release hearings. In 1988 Mel was promoted and became a Court Reporter in Orange County Family Court where he worked on such cases as child custody, child neglect and abuse, juvenile delinquency and similar family court cases.

In 1989 Mel became Sullivan County Court Reporter where he handled all the criminal cases in Sullivan County and did some Supreme Court cases when needed. In 1997 he was promoted to the position he holds now, Senior Court Reporter assigned to the NYS Supreme Court in Ulster County.

Mel has always been civic minded. He has been on the Town's Planning Board for approximately 13 years, previously served three years as its chairman and is presently serving as its chairman. He belongs to the Friends of Historic Rochester and the Hudson River Maritime Museum.

He is an avid boater and fisherman, belonging to Boat Owners Association of the U.S. (BOAT/US), Ulster County Bassmasters, Bass Anglers Sportsmen Association (B.A.S.S.) and the North American Fishing Club.

Mel has been married 34 years to his wife Elaine. His daughter Lisa still lives in the Town with her husband Jason and their two children, and his son Adam lives and works in Albany.

Mel's vast courtroom experience, his administrative abilities, common sense approach and longtime roots in the community will enable him to be a fair, knowledgeable and compassionate judge for the Town of Rochester.
